Surprise! The world's most corrupt institution has been manipulating its privileged position in the D.R. Congo to get a slice of the action. The BBC is shocked, shocked I tell you, that the UN can be so depraved.
The action line is that the UN investigated its peacekeeping operation in D.R. Congo, and found credible evidence that soldiers were: arming people they were supposed to be disarming; smuggled metals and ivory; used UN equipment to transport smuggled goods; and provided logistical support to rebel factions.
Something in common with other scandals - like the Oil for Food banditry - is that the internal UN investigation was suppressed.
Hint to the BBC - if you investigate the procurement contracts for D.R. Congo peacekeeping operations, you'll find a whole lot more corruption going to the very highest levels of the UN in New York.
